Glasses For Missions

Romania 08

We thank you for partnering with us on our mission trip to Romania. We are instructed in the Bible to “Go and make disciples of all nations…” As always, it was a very rewarding trip to be able to see how people in other countries live. We flew from Miami to London and then from London to Budapest, where one person lost their passport and was detained for 2 hours. We then traveled on a hair-raising, non air conditioned van ride for 12 hours to Deva, Romania. We opened the vent in the roof of the van to let air circulate through the van. Even so, one person passed out on the van from the heat and another suffered with stomach problems. This was how our trip began.

Sixteen people from Coral Ridge Church went on this trip to Hunedoara, to assist in the Adult EE and Kids EE clinics. The Adult clinic had approximately 30 participants. We assisted by acting out presentations and illustrations for the clinicians so they could observe how the presentation is done rather than just hearing and reading about it. We also accompanied the clinicians “on the job training” as an example of how the EE presentation works. We were in a very impoverished area but the people were very open to hearing the gospel and many made professions of faith.

The kids EE clinic had an average of 42 participants of which 36 were certified. The Bethlehem Christian Center had Vacation Bible School with 200 children in attendance and the Maranata Baptist Church had Vacation Bible School with 100 children participating. All 300 of these children heard the Gospel and received the Kids EE Cube with a demonstration which showed them how to use it.

Glasses for Missions is our passion. The vision of Glasses for Missions is to glorify God by using the glasses project to enable Christians in developing countries to read the Bible and to show the love of Christ in presenting the Gospel.

The result of this trip is that eleven people from 3 different churches were certified to make glasses, and we left four glasses kits in Romnia. One of the kits will be used at the Center located in an impoverished area. (Each kit contains enough material to make 314 pairs of reading glasses). Three people were certified to make the glasses at this Christian Center. Stephan, from the Pentecostal church, received a kit and will use it for evangelism. Sammy, National Director of Youth EE in Romania, was trained and received a kit for Bucharest. The 4th kit was given to a local missionary.

Teams came from all over the US to be in Hunedoara for a week long “Salt and Light” celebration at the Bethlehem Christian Center. A team from Indiana came to work in the orphanage; a team from California taught sewing; a team from Sweden came to clean up the streets. There were also dental teams, teams to cut and style hair; and a nail salon.

The Bethlehem Christian Center offers many daily activities for the neighboring community. They have a “sports room” where the local kids can go to play board games, put puzzles together, draw, or socialize. They have a computer room called “Godsnet” to give instruction in computer skills and teach them how to fish over the Internet. Twelve sewing machines occupy a room where girls are taught to sew to enable them for employment in one of the local clothing stores or for domestic use.

We had several “way of life” opportunities as we traveled on the plane and the streets around our hotel. We thank God for all the opportunities he gave us. 1Timothy 1:12 “And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me because He counted me faithful putting me into the ministry”.
